York River Oyster Company

YROCAt the mouth of Sarah’s Creek is the York River Yacht Haven and York River Oyster Company restaurant — a full service marina along with a “Shell of a Good Time!” eatery.  The tone is casual, with an outdoor covered patio and bar area leading to a dining room inside. We sat outside under a brilliant blue awning alongside beautiful boats at the dock with the York River in the background.

The list of starters was an appetizing challenge in deciding, with choices from fried green tomato caprese to fried pickles. All were tempting, though we decided on the YROC nachos, lightly dusted with Old Bay, covered in cheese sauce, black bean salsa, jalapeno peppers and sour cream. It was so good! The twang of Old Bay added a new twist; the large portion, plenty for a group of four, was devoured.

Even though it bills itself as a seafood-focused menu, this restaurant features so much more. Its menu is filled with many types of food, with choices from the raw bar, sandwiches, pastas and brick oven pizzas.

We chose the oyster po’ boy and crab cake sandwiches both served with a side of fries. The crispy fried oysters in the po’ boy were large and local coming from the Chesapeake Bay. They were delectable accompanied by coleslaw and tartar sauce on a crusty roll.  The crab cake on a freshly baked bun with lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce was ample and flavorful.

The menu is marked with symbols so diners know which items are vegetarian and gluten-free. The jala-pineapple quinoa burger is a vegetarian option. Several appetizers, along with Dickey’s seafood paella and fresh spinach salad are some of the gluten-free selections.

Auggie’s Key lime pie with raspberry sauce was our dessert choice. The pie – more like cheesecake – had the perfect amount of tart lime flavor, complimented by the sweetness of the raspberry, with a delicate graham crust. Another option is the s’mores pizza, which is hard to pass up!

The York River Oyster Company also features local music for a rocking good time on the river, but for us this was a nice respite from the hustle of city life, where the atmosphere and delicious food made for a picture perfect afternoon.
