The Surf Rider Restaurant

surf rider 1I like walking into the Surf Rider. As soon as you step inside this casual and easy going place, you feel like one of the locals. You sense that there are good food and gracious people here, and you’re right.

The open dining area, with a full bar off to the side, is flooded with natural light from large windows that wrap around on two sides. The décor is kept to a minimum, letting the spectacular water views of Whitehouse Cove take the starring role. Those scenic views and passing boats are enjoyable anytime — I find them beautifully serene as evening approaches.

The menu consists of quintessential seafood house fare, featuring steamed, broiled, and fried seafood platters, crab cakes, steaks, burgers, and daily specials. My all-time favorite starter is the hot crab dip, consisting of rich cream cheese and lump crab, lightly seasoned and served with warm pita chips. Try the restaurant’s tangy sweet and spicy shrimp — it’s tossed in a honey chili sauce, giving it just the right amount of heat and sweetness. A tasty choice from the steamer is the Surf Rider crab pot with crab legs, shrimp, clams, smoked sausage, and corn on the cob, served with a side of broccoli and Hollandaise sauce (the large broccoli crown, steamed to perfection, is almost a meal unto itself).

If you are a burger lover, you will want to try the Chesapeake Bay burger, topped with a broiled crab cake, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion. It’s a perfect flavor combination! My favorite is the black and blue tortilla wrap, filled with blackened tuna, blue cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and red onions, served with homemade chips lightly dusted with Old Bay seasoning. The tuna is seasoned and cooked as you like. Leave room for a homemade dessert — choose from the Key lime, coconut custard, or apple pie.

The Surf Rider is open every day from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Dock your boat at Whitehouse Cove Marina on Bennetts Creek in Poquoson; it is a Chesapeake Bay oasis.
