The Oar

Located on the Patchogue River, The Oar is a casual dining spot with outdoor and indoor dining, bars situated out and in as well, and nights featuring live music. There’s no doubt this place wants to attract boaters, as its website’s home page proclaims: “Longitude:W. 073 01.060, Latitude: N 40 45.3666.” A raw bar seems obligatory at a restaurant like The Oar, but it rises above the ordinary shrimp, clams, and oysters and offers tuna tartare as well. Again, lobster bisque might be expected, but the offering was richer, thicker, and more generous in its serving than many other seafood eateries. Salads were generously proportioned as well, and the spinach or caesar salads (with perhaps seafood or chicken added) would be a filling lunch in itself.

Swordfish, salmon, shrimp, monkfish and other fried and grilled seafood offerings are again dishes diners would look forward to, and The Oar does not disappoint. But how about digging into a lobster pot pie? This dish is far from the mundane comfort food of a winter’s evening. For the boaters who arrive by sea but prefer to dine from the land, the menu offers burgers, steaks, chicken dishes, and pastas. The lunch menu has a great sandwich selection as well. Without a vegetarian or vegan offering on the menu, the waitress was asked if the kitchen could accommodate such a request. Though told “no” without an inquiry being made, a manager later remedied the refusal with an assurance that the kitchen “would make anything” to satisfy a dietary preference, which should be reassuring to those with allergies or dislikes who need to make menu modifications.

Desserts such as tiramisu and carrot cake might once again be expected (and tasty). But how about a stuffed “tollhouse” chocolate chip cookie or house made doughnuts with vanilla ice cream? The Oar is open daily in the summer for lunch and dinner, with room for about a half-dozen docking and dining boats.

It offers a reasonable fixed price dinner menu Sundays through Thursdays, and Friday “Happy Hours” at their outdoor gazebo.
