The Boatyard Bar & Grill

The Boatyard Bar & Grill is in Annapolis just across Spa Creek from downtown Annapolis. The popular family-friendly restaurant is filled with great food and daily specials.

The Boatyard is easy to get to. You can dock at the nearby Annapolis City Marina or tie up a dinghy at the end of Fourth Street, a half block away.  Take the water taxi or walk from Annapolis.

The menu features plenty of fresh and local Chesapeake seafood, including a well-stocked raw bar with several varieties of oysters, a daily fresh rockfish dish, and the catch-of-the-day smoked on the premises.

The most popular dish, according to The Boatyard’s service manager, Steven Ridgeway, is the lump crab cake, in a sandwich or as an entrée.  Close seconds in popularity are the flounder BLT, fish tacos and yin and yang soup—The Boatyard’s own blend of broth-based Maryland crab and cream of crab soups.

I ordered the day’s rockfish special, perfectly pan-seared and served over brown rice and asparagus with a sprinkling of blue cheese. My friend ordered the Black Angus filet mignon, which he found tasty, albeit on the smaller side. He satisfied his hunger with delicious smashed red potatoes. Other meat offerings that night included a house-made Carolina style barbecue, Jamaican jerk pork chop and Black Angus burger.

The Boatyard also offers dinner-sized salads, homemade soups, and sandwiches, which include vegetarian choices. Gluten-free dishes are noted on the menu, and the kitchen will accommodate any other special diet needs.

Desserts include the house-made bread pudding of the day and dessert nachos. An outside bakery provides Key lime pie and 10-layer Smith Island cakes. I had a delicious peach cinnamon bread pudding, and my friend polished off a slice of Smith Island white cake with dark chocolate icing.

The Boatyard doesn’t take reservations, but will seat large groups upon availability. The bar gets crowded, and there can be a wait at peak hours. It is open Monday thru Friday, 7:30 am to midnight, with happy hour specials, 3:00 to 7:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 am to midnight. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.
