The media usually only reports on negative boating incidents; unfortunately, tragedies will sell more newspapers than an article on the joys of boating at night. But no one should be deterred from enjoying the pastime because they think recreational boating is dangerous. It is no more hazardous than driving, thought it is different. It’s up to boat operators to recognize and understand the differences and to learn how to run boats safely and competently in that different environment.

The United States Power Squadrons (USPS®) is America’s
largest and oldest recreational power and sail boating organization, delivering safe boating. With representation in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam and Japan, USPS has over 40,000 members organized into 440 local units (Squadrons) and 33 Districts. On Long Island, USPS is represented by District 3 (D/3) with over 2,000 members in 18 local squadrons located on both the North and South shores from Brooklyn and Queens in the West to both forks in the East, ensuring boaters of a Squadron presence wherever they choose to boat.
