Brophy Bros. is directly on the Ventura Harbor and seems to be bustling at all times—especially during weekends and happy hour during the week. Casual, local favorite for many years, thanks to offering the best view in the harbor, Brophy Bros. is a great spot to grab a drink, have a snack or enjoy […]

A few minutes’ walk from Port Jefferson Harbor, I saw a sign on the street directing me upstairs for good food. The sign wasn’t misleading. Arden is a spot for dining Wednesdays through Sundays, a place for brunching on Sundays, a venue for dancing to a hot DJ and a cool band (sometimes vice […]

At the mouth of Sarah’s Creek is the York River Yacht Haven and York River Oyster Company restaurant — a full service marina along with a “Shell of a Good Time!” eatery.  The tone is casual, with an outdoor covered patio and bar area leading to a dining room inside. We sat outside under […]

Warm breezes greeted us as we ventured into the Sailfish Marina Restaurant in Palm Beach Shores. Arriving with other late-lunchers and early-bird diners, we found a busy scene both inside, where open floor-to-ceiling windows carried in sea air, and outside, where dock chairs and large umbrellas front the water. We were seated at the back […]

King Neptune is a restaurant that lives up to its name, whether the reference is to the mythological Roman or the Disney mermaid’s dad. It’s a fine seafood eatery located a short walk from the docks in the fishing village of Port Salerno on the Manatee Pocket, a bay with access to both the Intracoastal […]

History isn’t usually a reason I seek out an eatery. I’m looking for good food, friendly service, and convenient docking, and Althouse 1848 satisfies my criteria. There’s a warm feeling inside this two-level gastropub and when the weather’s warm, there’s also outdoor seating overlooking the water. Though the inviting bar area has of the […]

Fabulous Floating Fare

Fabulous Floating Fare

As long as I can remember, I have loved boating. When I was a very little girl, my grandpa took us out on his 36-foot yacht, cruising the awesome Lake Erie waters. Grandma would pack enticing snacks to savor on board. Growing up, my family spent summers on Kelleys Island, where my parents owned a small but sturdy Chris Craft. Mom often packed yummy treats and we’d embark on a fun day of boating, traveling to neighboring islands. These days, my husband and I live on a stunning lake and love to spend time floating on our deck boat. I now prepare the food and drinks to share with family and friends.

Entering Riverhead’s Farm Country Kitchen is reminiscent of entering a large model of a dollhouse. The words “cozy” and “charming” would capture the ambiance of the establishment, with the restaurant’s back patio overlooking a picturesque portion of the Peconic River. The main dining room is small but adequate. The fare is colossal. You may arrive […]

An eatery named after a ruined vessel may not sound all that inviting, and an unassuming main street diner may not look extraordinary. But as we all should know by now, names and looks can both be deceiving.
