Nat King Cole didn’t call the season stretching before us “those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer” for no reason. Boaters need to be mindful that the heat of the sun can dull our senses and our judgment, causing us to operate our vessels in an unwise and potentially dangerous manner.

Imagine sharing boating stories with a great group of friends at a potluck dinner, a bowling party, a dinner dance, and a picnic. The media usually only reports on negative boating incidents; unfortunately, tragedies will sell more newspapers than an article on the joys of boating at night. But no one should be deterred from enjoying the pastime because they think recreational boating is dangerous. It is no more hazardous than driving, thought it is different. It’s up to boat operators to recognize and understand the differences and to learn how to run boats safely and competently in that different environment.
