In October, Halloween is on our mind, and what could be more fun than listening to spooky ghost stories?

The Alexandria’s Ghost and Graveyard Tour is a 33-year-old event that will spook you out in no time as you’re guided by lantern through the beautiful streets of Old Town at night. You’ll be enthralled listening to accounts of unsolved mysteries, angry ghosts seeking revenge, and tales of romance of those who passed. As Alexandria is the hometown of George Washington, you’ll also hear spooky stories related to our first president and the people he knew.

As the tour goes along, you’ll stop and see shops that are haunted by ghosts and the Old Town ice house, where the ice was used for dead bodies before embalming. It’s told that you may even smell a burning body or hear yarns about how people tried fending off spirits in their own homes.

Tours depart from the Ramsay House Visitors Center (221 King Street) and end in a graveyard. The hour-long excursions are available all year round; in the spooky month of October they take place at 7:30 p.m. nightly, and also at 9:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (guests are asked to arrive five to 10 minutes before the start time). Public tour prices as of printing are $13.00 for adults and $7.00 for children ages seven to 17; children under six are free.

If you’re not too scared to think of your stomach, you’ll enjoy the Dine Around of Old Town Tour. Over the course of three-and-a-half-hours, you’ll visit three restaurants and be regaled with sagas, ghost stories, and folklore. Tours take place October 5 and 19 and November 2 and 16. Call 202-683-8847 for more information.

Go by boat! Transient space is available at Old Dominion Boat Club, where reservations are strongly suggested (703-836-1900). The start of both tours is only a short walk away.
