skippers1Skipper’s relaxed and bustling atmosphere, extensive menu, and friendly service make it a perfect spot to stop along Maryland’s coast. After ordering our drinks — there are many beers and specialty cocktail options available and soft drinks too — we enjoyed them with an ocean breeze from the open door as we perused the menu. There is seating both indoors and outside, many with stunning views of the water and the dock as boaters pull into the restaurant’s transient slips.

The vast selection of appetizers alone includes crab-centric specialties, Southern favorites, and even poutine. We ordered Skipper’s award-winning Maryland vegetable crab soup, which was delicious.

Entrée options include plenty of fish, or shrimp, sandwiches filled with fish, or fried seafood Po’Boys with oysters, shrimp, or clams. You can also get your fried seafood in a basket. Steamed shellfish buckets are another mainstay of the menu. We feasted on an order of steamed blue crabs dusted with Chesapeake Bay seasoning and served with a bucket of tools set on butcher paper. Cracking the crabs and sucking out the sweet meat proved to be a delightful way to enjoy a leisurely lunch. Be sure to ask for extra butter for the crabs.

Those that prefer meat can choose a burger or a grilled chicken sandwiches, as well as steak, pork kabobs or salads topped with fried or grilled chicken. The symbols on the menu at Skipper’s make it easy to spot items that are gluten-free and vegetarian, such as the Maryland tomato stack and the baby kale and arugula summer salad. Many of the salad items are vegan as well.

Save room for delicious, items off the dessert menu, such as sweetie pie’s corn cake, featuring Old Bay ice cream, and the dock bar crush brûlée, which is a combination of Skipper’s orange crush adult beverage and crème brûlée, which can be made gluten-free upon request.

Skipper’s is open for early dinner Tuesday to Thursday from 3:00 to 9:00 pm and for lunch and dinner Friday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. They close at 8:30 pm on Sundays. Reservations aren’t required for dining and docking or walk-ins, but they are strongly recommended for large groups of eight or more.
