Short Beach

February 1, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Are you looking for a clean, sandy beach between Oceanside and Amityville? Short Beach is what you’re seeking!

This small basin, tucked into the northwestern side of Jones Beach State Park, is adjacent to the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station and located just between Jones Inlet and Bascule Bridge on Sloop Channel.

From points west, take Reynolds Channel east past Jones Inlet into Sloop Channel.  Short Beach is located off the western tip of Jones Beach just east of G C”1” west of the Bascule Bridge.  From points east, take the state boat channel west past Zach’s Bay, continue west past the Jones Beach Causeway into Sloop Channel. Continue west of the Bascule Bridge.  Short Beach is just south of R”6.”

The eastern side of the basin is a great place to drop anchor and spend the day relaxing and swimming. Short Beach has ample space to have fun, and can serve as an alternative to the often-crowded Zach’s Bay, especially if you get a late start to the day.  There are no facilities, so be prepared if you plan to spend the day.

While the Coast Guard Station is close, it is not open for individual tours. However, it can be fun to view the Coast Guard vessels at dock and carrying out patrols.
