Santa Arrives in Rockport

rockport 1Keep an eye out for Santa if you’re sailing near Rockport on December 5th. That’s when Santa will trade in his reindeer for a lobster boat.  He travels across Sandy Bay en route to Rockport’s T-Wharf. Santa is scheduled to dock at 3:45 pm, just in time for a tree lighting ceremony at Rockport’s Dock Square.

The festivities, including carols and a performance of “Christmas in Rockport,” mark the start of a month of holiday festivities in this charming coastal town on Cape Ann. About an hour north of Boston, Rockport is the prefect place for a quick getaway, good food, and lots of great holiday shopping. If you’re arriving by boat, you can moor at the Sandy Bay Yacht Club, Enos Marine, or Brown’s Yacht Yard.

rockport 2There is plenty to do in Rockport year-round, but December features lots of special events. On three consecutive Saturdays in December, for example, Tuck’s Candy Factory at 7 Dock Square will offer free candy-making demonstrations.

For art lovers, Rockport’s Holiday Gallery Stroll is a great way to meet local artists and find one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. Spend the day on Saturday, December 12, or Sunday, December 13, visiting shops and galleries. Visit the annual Student and Studio Potter Show at Cynthia Curtis Pottery. The public is even invited to join local artists for a free reception from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on the 12th. The studio is at 80 Pigeon Hill Street.

You can find Gallery Stroll maps at all the participating galleries and at the Rockport Information Center Barletta Park. Besides the Gallery Stroll, the weekend festivities will include street musicians, hayrides, carolers, and more.

Not far from the Cynthia’s pottery studio, at 52 Pigeon Hill Street, is The Paper House. It was built in 1922 by Elis Stenman, a mechanical engineer. Yes, Stenman built the house, and the furniture inside, out of paper!
