Old Key Lime House

old-key-lime-house-1Built in 1889, Old Key Lime House in Lantana is the oldest waterfront restaurant in Florida. Painted with bright, tropical colors, the eclectic restaurant sits right on the edge of the Intracoastal Waterway.

A large, floating dock provides plenty of space for diners arriving by boat, and dockhands are available to help as you arrive. My husband and I recently invited my parents who were visiting from out of town. We decided on Old Key Lime House for the ambiance. Once you step inside, it feels as if you’ve been transported to Key West.

I couldn’t resist the conch chowder for a starter. The soup was creamy and bold with large chunks of conch and just the right amount of spices. We also ordered the bam bam shrimp to share. The large Gulf shrimp were rolled in panko breadcrumbs, lightly fried, and served with a spicy homemade remoulade sauce. Other choices for appetizers include steamed mussels, fish fingers, clams on the half shell, spinach dip, and chicken wings.

My son ordered the coconut shrimp served with a sweet and tangy mango chutney for an entrée. He ate every bite. Craving seafood, my parents ordered the lobster tail with mango butter, which had a rich flavor. Other options for entrees include blackened chicken Alfredo, jambalaya, lobster macaroni and cheese, and cedar-plank roasted salmon.

Vegetarians may enjoy fresh salads such as the tortilla salad made with baby greens, tortilla chips, roasted red peppers, black beans, olives, cheddar cheese, and an avocado ranch dressing. Some options can be tweaked to accommodate a vegan diet, and the staff is willing to accommodate dietary preferences such as gluten-free.

I’d recommend the homemade key lime pie for dessert — a delicious end to our meal.

Several tables provide dockside dining if you wish to eat outside. The dock is also a fun place for kids to feed the fish (just ask the waiter for leftover bread).

The Old Key Lime House is open Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 am – 10:00 pm and Friday to Saturday from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm. They offer live entertainment Tuesday through Sunday. On weekdays, there are half-price drink specials available from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.
