Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home, is one of Virginia’s most special and historically rich locations. The mansion and grounds provide an in-depth glimpse into George and Martha’s life.

The site is located along the banks of the Potomac River, making it ideal to for boaters; dock at Mount Vernon Docks, a quick walk to the grounds. Call ahead for space and fees.

There are events such as Christmas at Mount Vernon, which begins November 27 and runs through January 6. This is something not to be missed! The mansion is decked out in sparkling holiday decorations, featuring 12 Christmas trees, and you get to experience Christmas the way the Washingtons celebrated the holiday.  You can take a tour of the mansion and get to see the rarely open third floor. Be sure to participate in an historical chocolate making demonstration, too.

Another special part of this event is meeting Aladdin the Christmas camel.  Aladdin was brought to Mount Vernon in 1787 by George Washington. He paid 18 shillings for Aladdin to entertain his guests. Nowadays, guests of all ages can take selfies with (an ancestor of) Aladdin!

In the evenings, Mount Vernon has fireworks choreographed to holiday music. Local choirs serenade guests as they stroll through the estate and interact with re-enactors.  You can even learn 18th century dance moves in the Greenhouse.

Christmas at Mount Vernon is a perfect way to start your holiday season off and immerse yourself in the history and experience of our first president.
