Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls

masons-sidewalkMason’s Famous Lobster Rolls has brought New England to Main Street, Annapolis, where crab usually reigns. With fresh lobster trucked in daily from Maine, Mason’s authentic lobster rolls, chowder, bisque, and salads live up to their slogan, “Bringing Maine to Maryland.”

Convenient to boaters, Mason’s is a short walk up Main Street from the Annapolis Harbor. Mason’s also delivers. You can tie up for a short time for free at the Annapolis Dock, or take the harbor shuttle, and Mason’s will hustle your order to you.

Mason’s is casual — you order at the counter – and the prices are good. We started off with “lobstah” bisque and clam “chowda.” Both were creamy, but not too thick, and wonderfully flavored. The clam chowder may be the best I’ve tasted. My friend said the bisque had just the right amount of lobster chunks.

My friend had the Maine Classic lobstah roll, with a bit of mayo on top and some lemon butter. I went with the lobster salad, mixed with mayo, celery and lemon. They’re served on the classic New England split top buns, perfectly toasted for each order. Both were outstanding, the lobster tender and fresh, the mayo just right.

Mason’s also makes a Connecticut lobster roll, a lobster BLT, and Maryland crab roll, or you can get your seafood on a salad. The kids’ menu has grilled cheese and hot dogs. We ordered sides of homemade cole slaw and potato salad – tasty, but small portions. All beverages are non-alcoholic.

Mason’s owns the next door bakery and sells several of their treats. If you’re tempted by the chocolate whoopee pie, give in. The homemade marshmallow and chewy cake are totally worth the calories.

Mason’s has only 24 seats inside, and a few on the sidewalk, so manager Sarah Newnam recommends coming after the lunch rush. Because they make everything to order, they can leave out ingredients to accommodate special diet needs. Mason’s also will deliver ingredients packed separately, so you can mix them fresh on the boat when you’re ready to eat.

Mason’s opens every day at 11 a.m. and, except for Sunday, closes at 10 p.m. On Sunday they close at 9 p.m.
