Letter from the Editor

June 1, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

A calendar with June at the top is usually a calendar filled with happy activities— weddings, graduations, parties, Dad’s Day celebrations, the end of school, and lots of boating!

We know you’re like us and resist accepting too many on-land invitations, just to spend more time on the boat. Since that’s the case, you’ll want to be ready with an answer when the party host asks, “So where are you boating?” Just take a look at our magazine and reply, “We’re exploring Shelter Island,” “We’ve got tickets to a Mets game at Citi Field,” “We’re going to the Pirate Festival,” or “We’ll be paddling along the Nissequogue River.” How handy is that?

Along with giving you fun destinations (and tasty restaurants worth visiting), we want to keep you safe, well informed, and entertained.  That’s why we have stories that accomplish all those goals, from the rules that govern how the captain must act, to eyesight improvements, skin protection, and how some of our boating superstitions (perhaps) came to be.

We believe that an important component of fun on the water is feeling safe. We can’t overstate our support of Operation Dry Water, a law enforcement program seeking to rid our waters of boaters operating under the influence of alcohol and drugs. I’ve written an article on the consequences of BUI, which is certainly more than the probability of being arrested during the last weekend in June. I urge you to read it and to please act responsibly on the water, for your sake and for the sake of all the other boaters enjoying our beautiful waterways.

We’re sending our congratulations to dads, grads, couples, and everyone else celebrating this month. We’ll wave to you from the boat!
