La Parrilla Spanish Bistro

La Parrilla by Raven Peterson (1)La Parrilla, open since 2013, occupies the historic building nestled into a hilltop that was home for years to Costa de España. Serving classic Latin American and Spanish cuisine, the restaurant has a large outdoor patio that is the perfect place to enjoy sangrias, sunsets, and a glimpse of Port Jefferson’s scenic harbor.

Indoors is a lovely dining room that easily accommodated our party of eight as family members got together to dine with my sister who was visiting from California. As we were looking over the menu, we ordered a pitcher of white sangria — it was refreshing and fruity without being too sweet. We also shared tostones con pollo (shredded chicken with sour cream and guacamole) and platano rellano (sweet plantain served with shredded chicken and queso fresco) from the tapas portion of the menu. Both were ample and absolutely delicious.

Our evening’s entrées included the pechuga La Parrilla (grilled chicken marinated with herbs and grilled vegetables), lomo a la Parrilla (grilled pork loin medallions served over grilled vegetables), Caesar salad with chicken, and churrasco (a 16-ounce, herb-rubbed Angus shell steak).  I chose yellow rice and sweet plantains as my side dishes; other sides include black beans and Spanish potatoes. I’d choose another side than yellow rice next time, as it tasted like white to me. However, that is the only thing I took issue with during the evening, as everything else was fantastic.

The prices are reasonable, the food is flavorsome, and the sangria is amazing at this restaurant.  I will return to try the enchiladas, fajitas, paella, and other fish dishes. There are a few vegetarian-friendly dishes such as the vegetable burritos, but vegans may be limited to salads. Gluten-free choices are available.

Desserts include traditional flan, tres leches, chocolate fudge cake, and fried ice cream. Enjoy them with specialty coffees.

La Parrilla is open Sundays through Thursdays from noon to 9:30 pm and Fridays and Saturdays from noon until 10:30 pm. It’s a short walk for boaters from Danfords, the Setauket Yacht Club, and the town marina.
