gumbo limbo 2Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s 20-acre property on a protected barrier island provides a terrific escape from its urban surroundings of Boca Raton. It’s a great place for boaters exploring the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Beach County.

Founded in 1984, the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a refuge for many varieties of plants and animals. The northern area of the park features the Ashley Trail network, an outdoor amphitheater, and an authentic Seminole chickee (hut) that overlooks the Intracoastal. Keep an eye out and you might catch a glimpse of a manatee, heron, or juvenile sea turtle.

To the east, the park is bordered by a five-mile stretch of beach that serves as a turtle nesting ground from early May through October.

Although boats are prohibited from docking inside the protected land, Gumbo Limbo is just south of Spanish River Park, which has a small marina. To reserve a slip call 561-393-7840. There is also a nearby boat launch at Silver Palm Park.

The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Monday through Friday, and noon to 4:00 pm on Sunday.
