Frigate’s Waterfront Bar and Grill on U.S. Highway 1 in North Palm Beach is a favorite stop for my family of four. Nestled on the shore of the Intracoastal, it’s easily accessible by boat with 500 feet of dock space (first-come, first-served). And they happen to be dog friendly — a big plus for our miniature poodle.

frigates 2Palm trees, umbrellas, and tiki torches add to the ambiance of the waterfront restaurant. During a recent family visit, I started with a bowl of Thai mussels steamed in coconut milk, lemon grass, lime, cilantro, and chili peppers that added a nice spice. My husband decided on the Bahamian conch chowder, a red soup served with vegetables and fresh herbs, while the kids snacked on fried shrimp and chicken fingers.

For dinner, my husband ordered a staple at Frigate’s — the dolphin Reuben. A fresh spin on the traditional sandwich, it contains a blackened piece of mahi-mahi served on toasted rye bread with Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Thousand Island dressing. It’s a meal that may make you wonder why you haven’t tried it before, and it went well with sides of sweet potato fries and plantains.

I chose the fish tacos served with pico de gallo and a spicy remoulade sauce. Delicate pieces of blackened fish inside the tortillas were very fresh, and an Asian slaw topping added a nice crunch. The extensive menu at Frigate’s includes starters, “handhelds,” salads, soups, char-grilled selections, pasta bowls, seafood, and desserts like key lime pie, crème brulee, and zeppoles.

Vegetarians can find options such as fresh-made guacamole and gazpacho for starters. For something heartier, a variety of salads and pasta bowls could easily be altered to accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets.

Frigate’s also has a kids’ menu and is definitely family friendly (they even have crayons). If you’re hoping for a quick meal, this may not be the place. But here’s a tip: you can radio in your order from the boat, so it’s ready when you arrive.

Frigate’s is open from 11:30 am to 11:00 pm on Monday through Thursday and 11:30 am to 12:00 am on Friday and Saturday. Hours on Sunday, which includes brunch until noon, are 9:00 am to 11:00 pm.
