Feed and Grain

If you’re floating on a mooring in Northport Harbor or tied up to the town dock, you start wondering where to feed your hungry kids and thirsty crew. The answer is Feed and Grain, a moderately-priced, family-friendly restaurant within easy walking distance of the harbor.

In nice weather, there is outdoor dining on the terrace in front, shaded by umbrellas and trees. The wooden family-size booths inside are comfortable, too.

Choices run the gamut, with a fish of the day, lobster or mussels, fresh salads, vegetables of the day, and veggie burgers and veggie wraps. There’s a lobster and mussel special for kids with adult taste buds, and mac and cheese for the kid who eats little else but still appreciates a good mac platter when he or she sees one.

My husband and I like the fried calamari appetizer, and the fish and chips. If we’re there on a Monday or Tuesday night, we order the specially-priced lobster and mussels and chicken basket. If there are specials when you visit, I’d recommend you try them. Lately we’ve enjoyed the delicious and well-priced lobster gnocchi, Mahi Mahi, and shell steak with a mushroom and red wine glaze.

There’s a complete bar, which serves many kinds of beers, ales and even a blond Guinness, along with the usual bar drinks.

Desserts at Feed and Grain include crème brûlée, cheesecake, and flourless chocolate cake. Go ahead and enjoy as long as you take a stroll before or after dinner, checking out harbor views and Northport’s quaint shops and galleries (maybe you’ll visit the palm reader, too). As far as I know, walking along Main Street and enjoying Northport’s fresh air blows the calories away!

Considering how busy this place is, the service is always pleasant and efficient. In colder months, Feed and Grain is open every night for dinner and serves lunch only on weekends. In boating season, they are open for lunch and dinner every day.
