Cutty Sark Grill

October 5, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

cutty sarkThe cozy and casual restaurant at Cutty Sark Marina, located in the newly developed East Beach neighborhood of Norfolk, nestles into a row of marinas along Pretty Lake Avenue. There are finger slips for smaller boats and the restaurant can accommodate a few larger boats as well — call ahead to check on availability.

The Cutty Sark Grill staff is cheerful and you’re greeted upon arrival with big smiles.  The service is hard to beat and the atmosphere is attuned to boaters adding docking and dining to a boating day. You can choose to sit inside, where there is an old-fashioned vibe. Or sit outside on the deck overlooking the water. There’s live music all year (the deck has side coverings to keep out the chill); the musicians take requests, which makes dining here more of an experience than just a meal.

Once seated, drink orders are quickly taken and served while daily appetizers and are described by the wait staff. I’d start with Cutty’s fresh crab dip — it is served hot and surrounded by delicious house-made pita chips. Other appetizers include the steamed shrimp and tuna bites; these are large enough to share easily.

The menu isn’t a large one, but what is served is most satisfying. We ordered the tuna steak as an entrée — it was cooked to perfection. Other entrées include the fried seafood platter and the crab cakes. There are sandwiches, but many a boater comes for the tasty burgers, especially the cheeseburgers and bacon burgers. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options may be made to order based on the availability of daily ingredients.

Desserts include satisfying chocolate cake and apple pie.

The restaurant opens at 8:30 am every day of the week. Especially popular is the “Bite the Dog” breakfast (said to be a hangover remedy) that includes steak; other breakfast items are offered.

Cutty Sark closes after dinner is served (it varies, but around 8:00 or 9:00 pm).
