The Custom Café & Deli, open since 2011, calls a 100-year-old building home. Looking over the far corner of Port Jefferson Harbor, it offers a comfortable, casual environment to grab a bite to eat — it’s a great combination of deli and café.

custom cafe 2There is only one menu for the Custom Café, so whether you want breakfast, lunch or an early dinner, you are sure to find something that will satisfy your cravings for delicious food.  Breakfast anytime is a huge perk for late risers; from the basic egg sandwich to the hungry man platter (three eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, and cheese) there is something to satiate any size appetite.

I opted for a simple breakfast of French toast and bacon. Simple isn’t bland here — the French toast is served thick and the slices are piled four inches high. Maple syrup is served in individual packets on the side. My friend ordered a customized egg sandwich on a roll with ham, sausage, and mayo.  While this sounded like an odd combination, I tried it anyway. I have to admit that the sandwich was pretty good.

If you’re not in the mood for breakfast, order a half-pound burger, wrap, sandwich, panini, or salad (daily specials are offered on top of their regular menu). On another visit, I got roast beef on a roll with cheddar cheese and mayo. It was the perfect way to satisfy my sandwich craving!  My friend loves the tasty Monica, which is chicken cutlet with American cheese, bacon, and Thousand Island dressing.

There are several menu items that are vegetarian friendly, and since this eatery prides itself on customization, you can turn one of their delicious salads into a vegan dish. The roasted veggie panini is another tasty option.

While they take the “custom” part of the establishment’s name seriously, the staff is very friendly. They’ll go above and beyond to make dishes to your liking, even if the request is for something the chef has never heard of or made before.

Custom Café & Deli, open daily from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, is within walking distance of Danfords, the Setauket Yacht Club, and the town marina.
