blues fest 3blues fest 2Every year, boats line up along the shore of Sandy Point State Park as concert-goers soak in some blues. With headliners like Gregg Allman and blues legend Buddy Guy, this year’s Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival on Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17 is gearing up to be a good one.

There are limited slips at the park’s marina, but many boaters opt to anchor and dinghy in to the event, according to concert promoter Don Hooker.

“Some people just hang out in their boats and listen to the music,” he says. “But obviously we prefer when people buy tickets.”

Allman, who founded the Allman Brothers Band with late brother Duane, will take the stage along with Grammy award-winning Guy, Beth Hart, Jonny Lang, Charlie Musselwhite, Tommy Castro & The Painkillers, Shemekia Copeland, Sisterhood of Soul, and more.

“We’re really happy with the line-up,” says Hooker. “It’s going to be a great year — weather permitting.”

All proceeds from the annual event will be donated to charities such as We Care and Friends, Special Love, and The League For People With Disabilities. Since it began in 1998 the blues festival has raised more than one million dollars for charity.
