Images of summer boating along the Severn River always come to mind when I think of Annapolis, but no matter the season, this city is a bustling place to visit and dine.

chart house 2One of those dining destinations is Chart House, situated in what used to be the primary shipyard for John Trumpy & Sons. While part of a country-wide chain, the Annapolis Chart House is a singular dining experience. Overlooking Spa Creek and the Severn River, it offers an elegant dinner menu and atmosphere, perfect for special occasions. Nestled to the right of the dining room is the bar, a more casual space with gorgeous views of the water, cozy over-stuffed chairs, and a roaring fire in the fireplace in the winter.

My husband and I often start with cocktails and something from the Happy Hour menu. While he may choose a specially-priced premium draft, I have a Manhattan martini — by far the best of the cocktails I’ve sampled. On our latest visit, we split an appetizer featuring fried calamari and vegetables such as sweet potato, carrots, and bell peppers. Other delicious appetizer favorites include lobster and shrimp spring rolls, coconut crunchy shrimp, and blue crab dip served with warm crostini. I also highly recommend the cream of crab soup and fresh chopped salad featuring hearts of palm.

In the mood for tacos, I enjoyed the shrimp tacos and he ordered the fish tacos. Both tasted amazing and were the perfect portions following our appetizer. Chart House offers entrees such as glazed Chilean sea bass and pan seared scallops. Though the house specialty is seafood, the staff is extremely accommodating and happy to make adjustments and recommendations. There is also a separate gluten-free menu, as well as a children’s menu.

You can’t visit Chart House without indulging in one of their desserts, such as the signature Hot Chocolate Lava Cake, which features a molten center of Godiva liqueur.

Public marina dock space is available through Annapolis City Marina (410-268-0660 or VHF Channel 9), a two-minute walk away. Chart House is also five minutes away via water taxi from City Dock in Annapolis (410-263-0033 or VHF Channel 68).
