The spring of 1972 was a very exciting time for me. I was finishing up my sophomore year in college, and was not looking forward to the summer, as my parents had sold the family boat, Holiday. I had a job, so I saved my money towards a boat for me. It took me a […]

I think that my Jet Ski® trailer is cursed, because I have never had so many crazy things happen as occurred this past summer. When I returned home to Long Island after spending a year at college in Florida, I wanted to take some new college friends (also from LI) out jet skiing. Though we […]

It was a summer day like many others. My wife’s cousin and girlfriend were out for a weekend visit (I will refer to them as “Mike” and “Linda”), and we were going to incorporate family socializing into boating.  My wife, Daria (her real name), and I decided to take them out for a cruise on […]

I bought a brand new mooring line and went to the boat, where I discovered removing the old line was next to impossible without a knife. I didn’t bring one, so I let it stay in the water, placed the new line on the ring, and affixed that to the bow cleat. I took off and stowed the covers and the folding chairs, then lowered the anchor and left another 15 feet of line on the deck. As the launch service arrived, I took one last look at my boat and thought, “Hang in there! I’ll see you tomorrow.”

It all started when I played the odds against the weatherman’s forecast on the day of the Jones Beach Power Squadron’s annual “Lobsterfest” at the TOBAY marina.

I grew up watching shows like Flipper and The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. I always felt most comfortable around the water, so when I was 13 and learned that my bus driver had a boat for sale, I started driving my father crazy.

There are very few times onboard a boat as relaxing as being at anchor on a beautiful summer day. One such day held that promise as we left Northport at 11:00 am in our 37’ Silverton for a 20 minute ride to the anchorage area of Lloyd Harbor (along the southernmost part of the harbor just west of the lighthouse).

Last July, I got myself in the worst possible place. The day began like any other beautiful summer Sunday, with temperatures in the 80s and winds at 5 knots. I picked up my cousins from the City Island Yacht Club and motored back across the Sound to Manhasset Bay for lunch and a swim. By mid afternoon, when our bay constables informed us that the weather was taking a turn, I decided to run our guests back to City Island. I downloaded the radar and weather on my phone, saw the storm approaching the Bronx, and estimated I had enough time. We crossed the Sound to City Island in 10 minutes, but as we approached, it became evident that this was not the usual, quick summer thunderstorm.

We can plan and set up summer boating trips, and invite everyone we like to join us. But there will always be a party-pooper lurking about, ready to ruin the day if she feels so inclined.

The time had arrived to pick up our new (to us) 37’ Silverton Convertible with a hard top on the bridge! It had wintered in Freeport but would summer in Bay Shore, presenting us with the first opportunity to pilot our new purchase.

On October 30 & 31, 1991, the weather wreaked havoc on the east coast. The wind gusts were of hurricane force, and tremendous seas and high tides caused heavy surf and coastal flooding. This perfect storm—created by a collision between an intense low-pressure system and the remnants of a hurricane—affected an area from New England to North Carolina.

While mentally rummaging for stories for this column, I came up with many more than I would have thought possible (an unfortunate sign for an avid boater). Although I am not the captain of our boat – my husband wears that hat – I am a first mate, which carries its weight in responsibility. I should be taking an active part in the planning of our trips, making sure all necessary gear is on board, that systems are checked, and that “all things are a go.”

Imagine you’ve been boating for three decades, and figured by now you’ve seen and done everything imaginable. That would have been a good description of Larry Matzinger of Seaford in December, 2004, out on his dream boat, a 2003 27’ Shamrock named “Striper Viper.” The day had some early issues (hitting ground, calling for a […]

For my wife and me, 1984 involved two firsts: we had a baby daughter, and a new harbor to explore. Having recently moved eastward, our boat was moored in Port Jefferson after years of cruising the Sound from Huntington to Oyster Bay. One Sunday, my parents joined us for a day trip.

Rafting up with other boats can be fun and exciting, but it can have some down sides as well. A few years ago, we went out for the day to Pirates Cove. The cove is great for getting together with family and other boaters to enjoy climbing the hills, swimming, or just relaxing, and that’s all we expected to do that day. However, we definitely did not get the day we were expecting!

Going out for the day requires a series of decisions that can make your boat trip go smoothly or find you floundering about.

In 1980 my wife Lita and I were living in North Bellmore. The 45 minute trip to get to our boat moored in Oyster Bay was a real time-killer, so that spring we decided to move our 25’ Revelcraft to the south shore. Freeport seemed to be a good location; it was only 10 minutes […]

One sunny day, I met up with two friends for an afternoon of waterskiing. After skiing for more than two hours, we were bored and decided to find a place to eat. The sun was still shining and the waters were calm, so we all agreed it would be way more fun to search for food with the boat rather than head back to the mooring and take the car to a deli.

Traveling from Bellmore Creek to Reynolds Channel was certainly stressful; we were in unfamiliar, small, shallow waters. The tension was high for a captain making my first big trip while simultaneously trying hard to protect my brand new investment. We went very slowly, our vision obscured by the vapors.

This can happen anywhere, to anyone. We have all heard stories of sleeping families succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning, people dying in cars or in planes. On boats, poisoning can occur while underway or even at anchor while running a generator.

We had just moved up to a 37’ Silverton convertible that we kept in Bay Shore. This boat not only provided an additional seven feet in length but an additional seven feet in the beam and had twin engines, which certainly made for much easier handling, especially when returning to our dock. I couldn’t wait […]
