Cantler’s Riverside Inn

cantlers 1Cantler’s Riverside Inn is only minutes by water from the busy Annapolis City Dock, even though you feel like you’re a world away. Overlooking the creek and banks, the restaurant is a favorite for boaters who want fresh seafood in a great setting.

The restaurant offers free docking while you eat.  If there are enough slips and you’re underway by 8:00 am the next morning, you may tie up overnight. There’s a big covered deck for outdoor dining and a comfortable bar and tables inside. Wherever you sit, boat shoes and shorts are as formal as you need to get. Service is friendly and welcoming.

Blue crabs reign here – served steamed, soft shell, in exceptional crab cakes, and as sumptuous soups. The crabs are fresh and caught locally in season. Customers near us who were happily picking away at their steamers said Cantler’s is always worth their trip from Virginia.

The restaurant has a good selection of seafood, including oysters, mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops and rockfish, as starters, accompanied by entrees including sandwiches, salads and dinner platters. On my visit, grilled rockfish with fennel crab cream sauce was a special. I ordered the lump crab cake sandwich, a dish that Marylanders pride themselves on knowing a good one when we taste it. Broiled and with only the slightest bit of breading, it was absolutely delectable.

My dinner companion went with the cheese steak sub, which he pronounced “great!” Another customer said the fried chicken never disappoints. Angus burgers and steak are also available for diners in a red meat mood. Cantler’s will accommodate special diet needs without prior arrangement, but assistant manager Dan Donnelly recommends calling ahead if you want to confirm a specific request. Cantler’s does not have separate vegan or gluten-free menus.

The bar has an assortment of beers, including a craft brew from the nearby Ocean City Brewery, and a short wine list.

Depending on what the local bakery, which provides the desserts, makes that week, the menu changes but Donnelly says the Key lime pie is their diners’ “runaway favorite.”

Cantler’s Riverside Inn is open Sundays through Thursdays from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 am to midnight. For parties of 10 or more, the restaurant suggests calling and making a reservation.
