Atlantis Marine World

Boaters looking to take a memorable day trip with their families should plan to visit Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead.  Celebrating its 10th birthday, Atlantis is bursting with indoor and outdoor exhibits, featuring African penguins, sea lions, seals, sand sharks, a tidal marsh, seahorses, touch tank, and the most adorable baby otter.

Want to come face-to face with sharks?  Then don the provided scuba gear and wetsuit and plunge into the 120,000 gallon shark tank.  Prefer to look for Davey Jones’ locker at the bottom of a lagoon?  You’ll get the gear and snorkel through tropical fish as you search for treasure.

On weekends at 1:00 and 2:45 PM, Java the sea lion will give visitors a kiss, and there are feedings and talks all day, every day.  Also check out the Submarine Simulator that lets you experience an underwater roller coaster, while you stay safe and dry.

Land & sea combine as three rare Japanese snow monkeys and African spur thigh tortoises are a featured part of the “Lost Temple of Atlantis” exhibit, recreating the lost city. And if you want to venture out, take the Atlantis Explorer Tour Boat on an interactive 90 minute educational adventure. It journeys down the Peconic River and into Flanders Bay, where aquarium educators offer voyagers a hands-on opportunity to discover Long Island’s ecological wonders.

Transient space is available at Larry’s Lighthouse (631-722-3400), Treasure Cove Resort Marina (631-727-8386), or the Riverhead Town waterfront (no overnight stays without permit), but always check for availability before heading out.  To Reach Larry’s, enter Flanders Bay from Peconic Bay heading west towards the Peconic River. Northwest of the main channel you’ll enter scenic Meetinghouse Creek through four private channel buoys.  To reach Treasure Cove and the Riverhead Town Waterfront enter Flanders Bay from Peconic Bay heading west into Peconic River.

Atlantis Marine World, 431 East Main Street, Riverhead, is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. For further information: 631-208-9200 or www.atlantismarineworld.com.
