AcQua in MerrickThe location along Merrick Bay is cool, the restaurant’s indoor and waterside décor is comfortable, and its service staff is agreeable but not intrusive. Yet there’s not a single indication that anyone working in the kitchen at AcQua is laid back — you know from your first bite that the focus is on the food.

This is a family-style restaurant with an à la carte menu. It easily accommodates a boatload of hungry diners of all ages, yet it’s also ideal as a romantic dining spot for a couple who’ll literally share a meal.

From appetizers to entrées, the menu selections are categorized into “half” and “full” orders. Half is more than ample for two and full orders are abundant — depending on your appetites, it may serve four or five. Start with baked clams and a cold antipasto, or soak up some of the house salad’s delicious balsamic dressing with the warm bread brought to the table soon after you arrive.

Pastas were bursting with flavor and the sauces well-seasoned. Choose linguini, rigatoni, penne, fettuccini, or cappellini topped with marinara, vodka, filetto di Pomodoro, Siciliana, Alfredo, Bolognese, or white or red clam sauce. Or try the lobster ravioli (the night we visited, porcini mushroom ravioli was a special). Chicken dishes are prepared many ways, including a tasty Parmigiana version; seafood and meat, such as porterhouse steak, all arrive at the table with the same devotion to satisfying your taste buds.

Vegetarians and vegans feel included in AcQua’s family. Along with salads, there’s mozzarella and tomatoes and fried zucchini appetizers. Try the zucchini linguini, the eggplant Parmigiana, or my delectable choice of an entrée — flavorful broccoli in garlic and oil atop whole wheat pasta.

As expected, desserts are appealing. Why choose one cheesecake when you can order both the Italian and Oreo versions? Among the other scrumptious reasons to linger at the table are chocolate mousse, cannoli, and tiramisu.

While enjoying superb Italian dishes, we felt like a principe and a principessa. And after taking home what was left of our generous portions, we dined like royalty again the next day!

AcQua has live music on Fridays (check website for details). The restaurant has 300 feet of docking space — be sure to discuss the size of your boat when calling for reservations, which are highly recommended.
